Bonfire in Ludescherberg
On Funken Sunday, the Chrochner (school children) and the Fachilischwinger (boys who set up the bonfire) go from house to house, reciting their little verses and wishing you luck. In the evening, with the lighting of the bonfire, winter is symbolically driven away. You can easily remember the date: Funken Sunday is always on the first Sunday of Lent. The bonfire – briefly Funken – is an ancient fire tradition that is still widespread in the Swabian-Alemannic region today. Around the bonfire tree, a wooden tower is built, which is eventually set on fire. Since 2010, the Vorarlberg bonfire tradition has been part of the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO in Austria.
