A relic from the steam-powered era of the Arlberg Railway
The pump that gave its name to the trail along the Alfenz River is a relic from the time when the locomotives on the Arlberg Railway were still steam-powered . Steam operations began in September 1884 and ended with the introduction of electric train service in May 1925. Water cranes were located at the train stations to supply the locomotives with large quantities of water for steam generation. The water came from the Alfenz River and was transported to the stations via pumps and supply lines.
