The World Is No Longer What It Was Yesterday – A Search for Meaning Between Peace and War

The war raging in the heart of Europe, now unfolding in Ukraine, was something none of us with whom I have spoken could have imagined possible after the tragedy of the Second World War.

Have we become too unaware of the dangers that the shadow within our individual psyche can pose to the whole? And conversely, how much can the unfolding of what is illuminating within us, and the transformation of what is destructive, contribute to ourselves and to the world as a whole?

C. G. Jung, who was likewise called as a physician to a deeper understanding of the psyche and the question of meaning, came from a very different background: Switzerland, a country spared from war. He was able to explore a process in the depths of the human soul—the collective unconscious—that is crucial for the individual search for meaning between opposites. This process brings about the true development and transformation of the psyche through the relationship between consciousness and the unconscious. The origin of this becoming lies in a core center of the psyche, which he called the SELF.

We are invited to become consciously aware of this step by step along a path of inner growth.

By cultivating peace within ourselves and transforming what is destructive in us through a path of self-knowledge and practice, reconciliation with our surroundings can occur. This gives meaning to our lives and helps create peace in the world.

Drawing on the visionary verses of the poet Ingeborg Bachmann, who remained a lifelong pacifist and wrote against the repression and denial of war, we seek to recognize these individual stages and mature into our own deeper sense of meaning.

She herself wrote: “I did not write this poetic message; it was given to me by another hand as a gift for all people.”
