On Funken Sunday, the Chrochner (school children) and the Fachilischwinger (boys who set up the bonfire) go from house to house, reciting their rhymes and wishing you good luck. In the evening, with the burning of the bonfire, winter is symbolically expelled. You can easily remember the date: Funken Sunday is always on the first Sunday of Lent. The bonfire – simply called Funken – is an ancient fire custom that is still widespread in the Swabian-Alemannic region today. A wooden tower is erected around the bonfire tree, which is ultimately set alight. Since 2010, the Vorarlberg Funken tradition has been included in Austria's UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.
