On Spark Sunday, the Chrochner (schoolchildren) and the Fachilischwinger (boys who set up the spark) go from house to house, reciting their little rhyme and wishing you good luck. In the evening, with the burning of the spark, winter is symbolically driven away. You can easily remember the date: Spark Sunday is always on the first Sunday of Lent. The spark fire – short for spark – is an old fire custom that is still widespread in the Swabian-Alemannic region today. Around the spark fir, a wooden tower is erected, which is eventually set on fire. Since 2010, the Vorarlberg spark tradition has been part of the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage of Austria.
