On Funken Sunday, the Chrochner (schoolchildren) and the Fachilischwinger (boys who raise the funken) go from house to house, reciting their little sayings and wishing you luck. In the evening, with the burning of the funken, winter is symbolically driven away. You can easily remember the date: Funken Sunday is always on the first Sunday of Lent. The funken fire – shortly referred to as funken – is an old fire custom that is still prevalent in the Swabian-Alemannic region today. A wooden tower is erected around the funken fir, which is finally set on fire. Since 2010, the Vorarlberg funken tradition has been recognized as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in Austria.
