After the death of their mother, sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes Borg (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) face the challenge of dealing with their estranged father Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård) – a once-celebrated director who has largely fallen into obscurity. Nora has uncompromisingly pursued her career as a theater actress, while Agnes has chosen a quieter life with family and a stable job. Gustav has written a new screenplay and offers his daughter Nora the lead role. However, she resolutely declines the offer. At a retrospective of his films in France, Gustav meets the successful Hollywood actress Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning), to whom he ultimately transfers the role originally intended for Nora…
