It is the year 1580, and William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal), who works as a Latin teacher in the small English village of Stratford-upon-Avon, falls in love with Agnes (Jessie Buckley). There are increasingly fewer whispers in the village that she is not actually a healer but a real witch. But William doesn't care. The two plunge headlong into their life together and quickly have three children. First, Susanna (Bodhi Rae Breathnach) is born, followed shortly by twins Judith (Olivia Lynes) and Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe). However, for William, the dream does not end with family just yet. He wants to leave teaching behind and work as a playwright. However, in the countryside, that is easier said than done. So, encouraged by Agnes, he goes to London. At first, the family is only separated by distance, but then the plague sweeps through the land and also kills Hamnet at just eleven years old. This drives William to write a piece in honor of his son…
