Sadie Smith – 34, ruthless, seductive, former FBI agent – is sent by a nameless employer to a remote area in southern France. Her task: to infiltrate a commune of anarchist environmental activists suspected of carrying out attacks. Initially, Sadie looks upon the idealists and the French countryside with its sleepy villages and farms with disdain. But then she comes into contact with Bruno Lacombe, the thinker of the group. Bruno rejects civilization, living in a Neanderthal cave, and believes that saving humanity lies in returning to its roots. Her engagement with him gives rise to doubts in the otherwise hardened Sadie, and she, who thought she held the strings, becomes increasingly captivated by him.
“The electrifying aspect of this novel is the connection between current politics and a dark counter-history of humanity. Kushner's exciting ideas have captivated us. The whole novel is a profound, irresistible page-turner.” The Booker Prize Jury
“Rachel Kushner reinvents the spy novel in a cool, highly intelligent way.” Hernán Díaz
“Rachel Kushner is the most exciting author of her generation.” Bret Easton Ellis
