Canvaslounge: The president´s cake
The film paints a complex picture of dementia and its effects on those affected and their relatives.
Falling (2020) is the directorial debut of Viggo Mortensen and tells the moving story of a father-son relationship, which is put to a severe test by dementia. The aging Willis lives alone on his farm, but his advancing dementia makes independent living increasingly impossible. His son John takes him in with his family to find a solution for the future together. Old conflicts, injuries, and differing life views resurface in the process.
The film paints a multifaceted picture of dementia and its effects on those affected and their relatives. It portrays the challenges of caregiving as well as the question of how to interact with a loved one whose personality is increasingly changing. With great sensitivity and strong acting performances, Falling tells a story of family, memory, loss, and reconciliation.
