The Großes Walsertal in Vorarlberg is a side valley of the Walgau. It extends from Walgau to the Bregenzerwald between the subgroups of the Bregenzerwaldgebirge (in the north) and Lechquellengebirge (in the south and east). The approximately 25 km long alpine valley - also characterized as a "raging ravine with many ravines" - is flowed through by the Lutz stream and offers its guests the most beautiful mountain landscapes for their summer and winter vacations. The communities of Großes Walsertal have joined together to form Großes Walsertal Biosphere Park, which is a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve.
Due to renovation work, the Arlberg road tunnel is closed from 24/04/ until 06/10/2023. You can get to Vorarlberg via the Arlberg Pass road (B197/L197).
All cars, estate cars, motorhomes and lorries without trailers as well as cars and estate cars with trailers (including caravans) are free to use the Arlberg Pass Road as long as the trailer does not exceed 750 kilograms (maximum permissible weight).
Between 1/7/ and 6/10/2023 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between 09:00 am and 05:00 pm cars with trailers exceeding 750 kilograms (maximum permissible weight) must use the long-distance diversions via Germany, Fern Pass or Switzerland.
ASFINAG recommends allowing for more time when using the Arlberg Pass. Especially on the weekends, delays are possible along the B 197/L 197 Arlberg Pass Road due to traffic overload.
You can find more information about this on the ASFINAG website at www.asfinag.at.
