Across Steinernes Meer-Formaletsch to Lake Formarin | Dalaas

During the summer months, the “Formarinsee” hiking bus from Lech takes you as far as the Alpe Formarin bus stop. From Alpe Formarin, the route follows the signposts towards Steinernes Meer in a south-easterly direction. On Steinernes Meer, a craggy karst plateau, you can discover 200-million-years-old evidence of the maritime past of the Alps: fossilised corals, shells, ammonites - you name it.  Below the Formaletsch peak, the trails heads westwards to Freiburgerhütte where hearty refreshments await. From Freiburgerhütte, the tour takes you around Lake Formarin on a gravel road and then back to the start at the Alpe Formarin bus stop.

Author's recommendation

Special features: Discover fossils dating from as far back as 200 million years. Take a good look, even pick them up, but make sure not to damage any of these objects - they would be destroyed forever.

Sites to see: Steinernes Meer - a mass of fossils, among them the Steinbockhorn or Ibex Horn, the name having been conferred upon the rock formation by local hunters.

Equipment

Sturdy boots, warm clothes, rain and sun protection, hiking poles recommended. Mobile phone for emergencies.
