In the modern Mumbai of the glass skyscrapers, the young widow Ratna works as a maid for Ashwin, a young man from a wealthy family who apparently has everything he needs for a comfortable life. Ratna, on the other hand, has one thing above all else: the will to work for a better life and to realize her dream of becoming a fashion designer. When Ashwin's carefully arranged picture book wedding bursts, Ratna seems to be the only one who understands Ashwin's deep melancholy. Ashwin falls in love with the house maid, who is so withdrawn, because he discovers in her a strong-willed and sensual woman who is willing to stand up for her dreams. Ratna also develops feelings for him. Nevertheless, she is only the maid for both of them, who is treated accordingly by his family. The deep connection between the two makes them all too aware of how incompatible the worlds they belong to are. So they must choose between social recognition and love - a love that must stand up to all political and cultural resistance and destroy their families.

"With sensitivity, humour and strong, authentic actors, Indian director Rohena Gera tells a tender love story between the worlds set in a Mumbai that is a wild melting pot of colours, hopes and fates. The Tailor of Dreams' is great cinema about love, family, traditions and religion, serious and wonderfully cheerful at the same time..." (polyfilm)

"The optimistic emancipation and love story dissects the tensions of Indian society trapped in caste thinking and tells in atmospheric images full of warmth and affection for the protagonists of humanity, pride and the hope of overcoming all barriers. (

"A real rarity: a credible, honest love story from India." (epd film)

"An Indian arthouse film masterfully staged against the backdrop of the bustling megacity of Mumbai." (
