Verein allerArt: LeinwandLounge 'Master Chengl'

In search of an old Finnish friend, Chinese cook Cheng travels to a remote village in Lapland. When he arrives, no one there seems to know his friend, but the local café owner Sirkka offers him a place to stay. In return, Cheng helps her in the kitchen and soon the locals are surprised with the delicacies of Chinese cuisine. Cheng quickly finds acceptance and new friends among the Finns despite cultural differences. When his tourist visa expires, the villagers devise a plan to help him stay ...

"The warm-hearted comedy convinces with endearing characters, beautiful landscape images as well as appetising menu creations such as herb reindeer in Asian style." (programmkino.de)

"Quiet culture-clash comedy about inwardly wounded people whose secret is only gradually revealed. The rapprochement of the highly different cultures takes place mainly through food, but the Finnish landscape also has a liberating effect in its roughness and authenticity." (filmdienst.de)

"With 'Master Cheng in Pohjanjoki', veteran director Mika Kaurismäki has made a feel-good movie that is about the important things in life." (Hamburger Abendblatt)

"'World cinema director' Mika Kaurismäki succeeds in creating the recipe for the 'perfect summer comedy after the crisis' with ingredients such as a large portion of humour mixed with a little bit of melancholy, a touch of exoticism paired with Finnish local colour and wistfully romantic tango music to sprinkle on top. (The Cinema)
