Verein allerArt: LeinwandLounge 'At Eternity's Gate'

Vincent van Gogh (Willem Dafoe) suffers from severe psychological problems and severe emotional pain. He is a successful painter and draughtsman, but plagued by world-weariness. In his sensory crisis, it is not least a priest (Mads Mikkelsen) who asks van Gogh: Are you the born artist? While his friend Paul Gauguin (Rupert Friend) plans a groundbreaking art revolution led by van Gogh, the artist flees into nature in search of a spot of earth that art has not yet discovered. But his mental demons do not let him go and drive van Gogh to a psychiatric institution and finally to cut off his ear and commit suicide.

"The genius of van Gogh is that he shows more than the obvious. What is universal? What eternity? The film's strength lies in the fact that it addresses precisely these questions. A work of art about an artist who perishes in his time and yet outlasts it." (Title Theses Temperamente, ARD).
"A portrait of moving sadness that also celebrates the art of the tormented man." (epd film)
