Culinary City Tour: 'History of salt, fabric and chocolate'

About 750 years ago the city of Bludenz was founded. Due to the market right the fortified settlement became a trading place for goods. The inhabitants of the town were farmers, craftsmen and merchants who brought modest prosperity and enriched the town with their shops.

In the 19th century the first modern factories were built and with the construction of the Arlberg railway Bludenz was connected to the international railway system.

Salt represents trade. It was purchased in exchange for local butter lard from Hall in Tyrol and brought over the Arlberg on mule tracks. It was mainly used for the preservation of food and still refines the taste of the dishes today.

The fabric stands for the textile industry and the great growth of the town in the 19th century.

Chocolate stands for the international location of Bludenz. The Swiss manufacturer Philipp Suchard produced his world-famous chocolate from exotic cocoa beans in Bludenz.
